In short

What STM-Électrique does in Laval

STM-Électrique is a firm of master electricians holding RBQ licence 5815-0137-01 and members of the CMEQ. In Laval, renovation is our most frequent request: kitchens, finished basements, garages and home offices. We also replace and upgrade panels and service entrances, install EV chargers and generators, and answer electrical emergencies 24/7. All our work meets the requirements of the RBQ and Hydro-Québec. We do not quote prices over the phone: we assess first, then give you a detailed written quote.

A city built in waves

Laval, a city that keeps renovating

Laval grew in successive waves. Chomedey, Pont-Viau and Laval-des-Rapides developed well before Sainte-Dorothée, Fabreville or Sainte-Rose. The result is a territory where 1960s bungalows, 1980s cottages and recent builds stand side by side.

That variety is why renovation is our most frequent request in Laval. A house changes over the decades: a basement gets finished, a garage becomes a workshop, a kitchen is redone, a bedroom turns into an office. Each of these changes calls for electricity the house was never designed for.

  1. The panel has to handle it. A house has a total capacity, and every addition eats into it. The load calculation decides, not the number of empty slots in the panel.
  2. The circuit has to fit its use. An oven, a dishwasher, a heat pump and an EV charger do not have the same requirements.
  3. The protection has to suit the room. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements and outdoor spaces each have their own protection requirements.

Adding a circuit is not just pulling a wire. It is the most common mistake we see after work done by someone unqualified: a circuit added any old way works, until the day it does not.

Renovations

The renovation work we do most in Laval

Kitchen

The most demanding room in the house

Each appliance has its own circuit, countertop outlets have their own rules, and under-cabinet lighting often needs a separate circuit. A kitchen redone without revisiting the electrical is a kitchen that will trip breakers.

Finished basement

Lighting, outlets, heating, sometimes a whole unit

Recessed lighting, outlets in the right places, extra heating, a bathroom, sometimes a full apartment. The basement is also where the panel is, so it is the ideal time to check whether it still holds up.

Garage and workshop

240 V for tools

240 V outlets for a compressor or a welder, enough light to work by, and sometimes a sub-panel if the needs are significant.

Home office

More outlets, stable power

A room turned into an office often needs more outlets than the original bedroom had, and a stable supply for the equipment.

Our services

Our other services in Laval

Electrical panels and service entrances

200 A, sub-panels, fuse panels

Replacement, upgrades to 200 amps, sub-panels, and bringing fuse panels and high-risk brands such as Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok up to code. We handle the load calculation and the steps with Hydro-Québec.

Electrical panel upgrades

EV charger

Level 2, 240 V

Level 2 chargers on 240 V, in houses and condos, with a load calculation first. A load controller often avoids a full service upgrade.

EV charger installation

Generator

Transfer switch and auxiliary panel

Manual or automatic transfer switch, an auxiliary panel grouping the circuits to back up, and the complete electrical hookup. The gas connection is done by a gas contractor, whom we coordinate with.

Generator installation

Lighting and smart home

Recessed, outdoor, connected

Recessed lighting, outdoor lighting and connected controls. We are a Sinopé certified partner and work with Hilo.

Close by

The advantage of our Laval warehouse

Our warehouse is in Laval and our offices are in Mirabel. In practice, common materials are close at hand: a panel, a specific breaker or a length of cable does not mean a trip to the other end of the region. In an emergency, that is time saved. On a planned job, it means less risk of a delay for want of a part.

Quotes

How we set a price

We do not give prices over the phone, and that is deliberate: two renovations that look alike on paper can require very different work depending on wall access, the condition of the panel and the age of the existing wiring.

To prepare a fair quote, we ask for your service amperage, the panel brand and a few photos: the panel with the door open, the main breaker label and the room involved. The quote that follows is detailed, and the price does not change along the way. Financing plans are also available (details in French).

Frequently asked questions

What Laval customers ask us most

My breaker trips when I run the dryer and the oven at the same time. Is that normal?

No. It is a sign that you have reached your capacity or that a circuit is undersized. Resetting the breaker every time does not fix it: over time you wear out the protection and end up not being protected at all.

I am redoing my kitchen. When should you come in?

Ideally twice: once while the walls are open, to run the circuits, and a second time at the end to install the appliances and outlets. Planning this with your renovation contractor avoids having to reopen a finished wall.

Can I add an apartment in my basement?

On the electrical side, yes, with the right supply and protection. On the municipal side, Laval’s zoning bylaw governs additional units, and that part is not up to us. Check with the City before starting any work.

Do I need to be home during the work?

For the first assessment visit, yes, it is simpler: you show us what you want to do and we see the constraints. For the work itself, it depends on the scope. We agree on access ahead of time and leave you a summary of what was done.

Do you work in every part of Laval?

Yes, from Chomedey to Saint-François, including Sainte-Rose, Fabreville, Vimont, Duvernay, Auteuil and Sainte-Dorothée. Our warehouse is in Laval, so no district is far.

Do you offer emergency service in Laval?

Yes. We respond 24 hours a day to any electrical emergency in Laval and the surrounding area. Call 438 542-7304.

Do you install EV chargers in condos?

Yes. We install EV chargers at home or in a condo, with a load calculation first.
