Days, nights and weekends

Real urgency when it matters

A partial power outage, a crackling panel or a burning smell cannot wait. At STM Électrique, we understand how critical the situation is. Our team of master electricians can be dispatched 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to make your home or business safe. We pinpoint the source of the problem and restore your power safely, day or night.

20-second check

Is the outage yours or Hydro‑Québec's?

Have your neighbours lost power too?

Do you see smoke or flames, smell burning, or see a power line on the ground?

In your home, what has stopped working?

Likely a grid outage

It is probably a Hydro-Québec outage.

An electrician cannot fix it: check the outage status and the estimated restoration time with Hydro-Québec. If power comes back for your neighbours but not for you, take the test again.

A problem in your home

The problem is probably at your electrical service entrance or your panel.

If the main breaker has tripped and will not reset, do not force it: the fault is still there. This is a job for a master electrician.

A supply problem

You are probably missing 240 V.

Often the dryer, the stove or the heating stops working. The cause can be in your home or on the grid: call us and we will tell you during the call. If it is the grid, Hydro-Québec asks to be notified at 1 800 790-2424.

A problem in your home

A circuit, a breaker or a connection is at fault.

If a breaker trips again as soon as you reset it, or if an outlet is getting hot or turning black, do not keep trying: leave that breaker off until we arrive.

When to call

It is an electrical emergency if…

Burning smell or smoke at the panel

Get out and call 911 if there is smoke. Do not open the panel again.

The main breaker will not reset

Or it trips again as soon as you reset it. Do not force it: the fault is still there.

Half the house without power

Some rooms work and others do not, often along with the stove or the dryer.

An outlet or switch that is hot, blackened or crackling

Stop using it and switch off its breaker if you can find it.

Mast, meter base or meter torn off

After a storm, a falling tree or ice. Repairing the meter base is the owner's responsibility.

Lights dimming or flickering everywhere

Throughout the house at the same time, not just for a second when an appliance starts.

A power line on the ground? Stay at least 10 metres away, do not touch it, not even with an object, and call 911. Hydro-Québec safety guidelines

Frequently asked questions

Electrical emergencies: your questions

Is there a 24-hour electrician in Montréal?

Yes. STM-Électrique's emergency line answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in Montréal, Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore, and a master electrician reaches you in 90 minutes or less. Call 438 542-7304.

How fast can an electrician get here?

In 90 minutes or less, anywhere in our service area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As soon as you call 438 542-7304, we assess the situation over the phone and give you the first safety instructions while you wait for us.

Is the outage mine or Hydro-Québec's? How can I tell?

Look at your neighbours. If they have lost power too, it is probably a grid outage: an electrician cannot fix it, and Hydro-Québec posts the outage status and estimated restoration time on its website. If only one room or one circuit is out in your home, the problem is in your installation, and it is a job for an electrician.

Half the house has no power. Who should I call?

Call us. When the dryer, the stove or the heating stops working while some lights still work, you are probably missing 240 V. The cause can be in your home, at the service entrance or the panel, or on the grid. Hydro-Québec's procedure calls for notifying it first at 1 800 790-2424: if that applies, we will tell you during the call.

A power line has fallen to the ground. What should I do?

Do not touch it, directly or with an object: even a branch can conduct electricity. Stay at least 10 metres away and call 911. A line on the ground can still be live even if it looks cut. Once the area is safe, we can repair what belongs to you, such as the mast or the meter base.

My main breaker will not reset. What should I do?

Do not force it: if it will not reset, or trips again as soon as you reset it, the fault is still there. Leave it off and call a master electrician.

An outlet or switch is getting hot. Is it an emergency?

Yes. Stop using a hot, blackened or crackling outlet or switch right away: switch off its breaker if you can find it and call us. If there is smoke or fire, get out and call 911.

My mast or meter base was torn off. Who pays for the repair?

Under Hydro-Québec's standards, the mast, the bracket and the meter base belong to the owner: a master electrician repairs them, at your expense. We handle the steps with Hydro-Québec for the reconnection. Sudden damage, after a storm or a falling tree, may be covered by your home insurance: check your policy.

Do you come out at night and on weekends?

Yes. The emergency line answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for homes and businesses alike, in Laval, on the North Shore, in Montréal and on the South Shore.

After the emergency: panel replacement, service entrance (in French), generator, general electrical work (in French) and all our services.

Sources: procedure (in French) and safety guidelines from Hydro‑Québec.
