An STM-Électrique overhead-to-underground service: from the pole to the house, underground438 542-7304

What is an overhead-to-underground service?

It is an underground service connected to an overhead Hydro-Québec line. The cable runs down the pole in a conduit, goes underground, then comes up to the house’s meter base.

When the Hydro-Québec line is overhead, the default service is overhead too: a mast on the wall and wires from the pole. Going underground is the owner’s choice, and the owner supplies the service, at their own cost.

The result: no more mast or wires on the wall. In exchange, it takes a trench and more work than an overhead service.

What the price includes

Included in the price

$6,500 to $9,500

  • Conduit and cables, from the pole to the house.
  • The meter base, installed and connected by our master electrician.
  • The service request and work declaration to Hydro-Québec, which only a master electrician can file.
  • Removing the old overhead mast is discussed case by case, at the quote.

The private pole

About $2,200, extra

  • On our jobs, an overhead-to-underground service always uses a private pole. We supply it and set it.
  • It then belongs to you and is part of your installation.

Hydro-Québec fees

Usually under $500

  • Not included in our price: Hydro-Québec bills you directly.

Excavation

About $150 an hour

  • We take care of everything related to excavation. You can also have your contractor do it.
  • Laying the conduit and cables remains a master electrician’s job.

The private pole: what to know

Hydro-Québec prefers to connect on one of its own poles when all the conditions are met. That is often not possible: the pole’s owner (Bell, Télébec or another) must give written consent, and always refuses if the pole already carries an underground connection or a transformer. Most of the time, Hydro-Québec also has to raise its wires, at your cost.

In that case, the owner installs their own pole. On our jobs, that is always the case. This pole belongs to you and is part of your electrical installation. Hydro-Québec never works on private poles. The electrical contractor sets it.

To be connected, the private pole must be:

  • 30 m or less from the Hydro-Québec line or the lot line;
  • 3 m or less from a drivable way (a driveway counts), reachable at all times by a bucket truck;
  • class 7 or better, buried at least 1.7 m;
  • free of any transformer or other equipment.

Based on Hydro-Québec’s E.21-10 standard (Livre bleu), sections 2.7.2.5 and 2.8.

The steps, from quote to connection

  1. The quote

    Free, with a detailed price.

  2. The request to Hydro-Québec

Our master electrician files the service request for you. Hydro-Québec’s timeline starts from that filing.

  3. The job, in one day

Pole, conduit, cables and meter base.

  4. The work declaration

When the installation is ready, we send it to Hydro-Québec. No separate declaration to the RBQ: it is included in the request to Hydro-Québec.

  5. The connection by Hydro-Québec

Only Hydro-Québec connects its line, installs the meter and turns the power on, on its own schedule. That day, plan for a power outage of 7 to 8 hours.

Overhead-to-underground service under construction: grey conduits along the pole, then in the trench to the house

On this overhead-to-underground service, the grey conduits run along the pole, drop into the trench and continue to the house under construction. Once the trench is backfilled, the cables are underground.

The excavation can be done by us or by your contractor. Laying the conduit and cables, however, is reserved for a master electrician: a licence is always required for electrical work, even in your own home.

Frequently asked questions

What is an overhead-to-underground service?

It is an underground service connected to an overhead Hydro-Québec line: the cable runs down the pole, goes underground and comes up to the house’s meter.

How much does an underground electrical service cost?

$6,500 to $9,500 at STM-Électrique. Add the private pole (about $2,200), excavation (about $150 an hour) and Hydro-Québec fees, billed directly by Hydro-Québec and usually under $500.

How long does the work take?

Our job takes one day. The connection by Hydro-Québec follows its own timeline, counted from the filing of the request. On connection day, the power is off for 7 to 8 hours.

Does the private pole belong to me?

Yes. It is part of your electrical installation, and Hydro-Québec never works on private poles.

Can electrical wire be run underground?

Yes, with conduit or cables that meet the Construction Code, installed by a master electrician. An owner cannot do it themselves: a licence is always required.

Can electrical cable be buried without conduit?

Not ordinary wire. The Construction Code provides for armoured or metal-sheathed cables designed for direct burial. Otherwise, the cable goes in a conduit.

How deep is the conduit buried?

The minimum depth is set by rule 12-012 and Table 53 of the Code, depending on the type of conduit or cable and the traffic above.

Can I dig the trench myself?

You can have the excavation done. Laying the conduit and cables, however, is reserved for a master electrician.

Is a declaration to the RBQ required?

No separate declaration: the work is declared in the request our master electrician files with Hydro-Québec.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, financing available through Financeit, subject to credit approval. Details are on our Financing page.
