In short

  • About 79% of Beaconsfield’s dwellings were built in 1980 or earlier, including about 30% in 1960 or earlier (2021 census).
  • About 86% of dwellings are single-detached houses, and the city has no dwellings in buildings of five or more storeys.
  • A fuse panel that works does not have to be replaced by law: a master electrician examines it, then explains where things stand.
  • A free written price, payment when the work is done, no deposit, by master electricians holding Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) licence 5815-0137-01.

What we do in Beaconsfield

Homes, plexes, condos or businesses: our master electricians, members of the CMEQ (Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec), travel to Beaconsfield as they do across the rest of the island of Montréal. Here is the planned work we do there; each job begins with a visit, followed by a written price.

Electrical panel

Fuses, 60 A, every position taken

We replace a fuse box with breakers; we upgrade a 60 A panel to 200 A; a subpanel is added when every position is occupied. Before choosing, we measure the house’s actual needs with a load calculation.

Service entrance

Mast, meter base and paperwork

Redoing the service entrance means redoing the path of the power between the grid and your panel. The load calculation and the arrangements with Hydro-Québec are part of our job, and a rusted mast is replaced during the same operation.

EV charger

Garage, driveway, outdoors

A Level 2 charger connected to a circuit reserved for it, most often a FLO Home X3. If the panel of a single-family house still has room and the charger isn’t too far from it, plan on around $1,750, unit included.

All about installing a charger

Generator

Portable or permanent

A 60 A manual transfer switch costs around $2,000, an automatic one around $3,200, installed and connected; the generator is extra. The essential circuits, such as the sump pump, heating and refrigerator, are grouped in an auxiliary panel.

Connecting a backup generator

General electrical work

Spa, pool, renovation

A spa or a pool is fed by a circuit of its own, protected against ground faults and fitted with a disconnect switch. We also handle the electrical work for a kitchen or bathroom being renovated, together with your contractor.

Our general electrical work (in French)

In Beaurepaire Village as elsewhere in the city, we also work for businesses: circuits for equipment, lighting for the premises, a workshop subpanel. When a generator has to protect a business, we first list the equipment that must never stop, for example a walk-in cooler, an alarm system or workstations.

A suburb built mostly before 1981

Beaconsfield came into being on June 30, 1910, when it separated from the parish of Saint-Joachim-de-la-Pointe-Claire. It grew slowly, to 990 residents in 1951, before quickly turning into a residential suburb during the 1950s and 1960s. Beaurepaire Village, the commercial area at the heart of the city, began to develop in 1925. Merged into Montréal in 2002, the city was reconstituted in 2006 and remains part of the Montréal agglomeration.

In 2021, Statistics Canada counted 19,277 residents and 6,755 occupied dwellings: 5,795 single-detached houses (about 85.8%), 520 row houses and 340 dwellings in buildings of four storeys or fewer. About 89.6% of households own their home. Here is the breakdown by construction period.

BuiltNumber of dwellingsWhat it means for the electrical system
In 1960 or earlier2,035 (about 30.1%)If a fuse panel is still in place, it can be replaced with a breaker panel; a corroded or loose mast is replaced along with the service entrance.
From 1961 to 19803,310 (about 49.0%)Aluminum wiring is concentrated in houses from 1965 to 1975: we check its connections, then redo them with suitable hardware.
From 1981 to 1990655 (about 9.7%)The panel’s capacity for a new appliance: a subpanel or an upgrade to 200 A, based on the calculation.
From 1991 to 2021750 (about 11.1%)Even when the installation is recent, it goes through a load calculation before an EV charger or a spa is added.

The load calculation for a house that receives an EV charger must include that charger. Depending on the result, we connect it with no other change, pair it with a load controller or increase the capacity first.

Fuses and aluminum: two issues in older houses

Keeping a fuse panel is not illegal: no law requires you to replace a panel that works. What matters is its condition, the capacity the house needs and what your insurer asks for; we provide the insurer with documentation if needed. On replacement day, plan on half a day to a full day without power; the exact duration is given to you with the quote.

Some panel brands should also be watched closely, including Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, Commander and Sylvania. We don’t replace them by reflex: the name on the door is not enough to condemn a panel, the inspection decides.

For aluminum, the solution isn’t necessarily to rewire everything. The connections are redone with hardware designed for aluminum, such as AlumiConn connectors and devices marked CO/ALR. A damaged circuit, however, is rewired. You then receive the work report, which is useful with your insurer.

Permits, PIIA and Hydro-Québec in Beaconsfield

In Beaconsfield, the PIIA by-law (site planning and architectural integration program) applies notably to new construction, additions visible from the street and renovations that alter a facade visible from the street; if in doubt, the City invites you to contact it. The City’s permits page lists, among other things, gas fireplace inserts, geothermal wells and spas, but mentions no electrical work.

A spa requires a City permit; its connection, for its part, calls for a dedicated circuit, ground-fault protection and a disconnect switch. As for the electrical formalities, a permit or a declaration of work when there is one, they are our responsibility.

Beaconsfield is not served by one of Québec’s municipal electricity systems: it is served by Hydro-Québec. If the service entrance has to be disconnected, we make the request to Hydro-Québec, then let you know when the interruption will happen.

From the call to the invoice, in three steps

The order doesn’t change, whether it’s an outlet or a complete service entrance.

  1. You describe the project

Call 438-542-7304 or request a quote. Tell us the service entrance amperage and the panel brand if you know them; photos of the open panel, of the label on the main breaker and of the wall it is mounted on speed up the assessment.

  2. A master electrician comes on site

They inspect the installation, from the panel to the service entrance and the circuits, and calculate the load if you are adding an appliance. Allow 24 to 48 business hours after the visit to receive the detailed quote.

  3. The work and payment

We apply the Electricity chapter of the Construction Code of Québec and test every circuit. Payment is made at the end, with no deposit, against a detailed invoice.

A bigger project? Homeowners can request financing pre-approval from Financeit: the rate starts at 12.99%, it is fixed for the full term of the loan, and the loan can be repaid at any time without penalty. The final rate depends on your credit history and on Financeit’s approval. Financing terms are set by Financeit and may change without notice; STM-Électrique is not responsible for them.

Electrical emergency in Beaconsfield

An outage or a dangerous installation can’t wait for a quote. At any hour, every day, our emergency service answers at 438-542-7304. Once the situation has been assessed over the phone, a master electrician is sent to your home.

Until they arrive, switch off the power at the main breaker only if you can do so safely, then keep away. And during an outage, a generator is never plugged into the dryer outlet: the current would flow back the wrong way.

Frequently asked questions in Beaconsfield

Do you do work in Beaconsfield?

Yes, throughout the city, from residential streets to Beaurepaire Village. Our master electricians travel across the whole island of Montréal, for homes and businesses alike.

My fuse panel works: do I have to replace it?

No law requires it. A master electrician checks its condition and the capacity the house needs. If your insurer asks for proof, we give you the necessary documentation.

What budget should I plan for an installed EV charger in Beaconsfield?

A FLO charger costs about $1,750 installed, unit included, if the single-family house has a panel with room and the charger is close to it. Québec reimburses $600 through Écorecharge to the owner of an electric vehicle, on an eligible connected charger, not on the installation. The grant is claimed after the work, with the invoice, and our invoice shows our name and our RBQ licence number.

Can I connect my spa myself?

Not its circuit: as the CMEQ points out, electrical work of any kind is reserved for electrical contractors. We install the spa circuit with its ground-fault protection and its disconnect switch.

Do I need a municipal permit for electrical work?

Beaconsfield’s permits page doesn’t mention it. The site planning and architectural integration by-law applies notably to new construction, additions visible from the street and renovations that alter a facade visible from the street; if in doubt, the City invites you to contact it. For the electrical work, the declaration of work and the permit, if one is needed, are our responsibility.

Can you connect my portable generator?

Yes: a power inlet installed outside, connected to a manual transfer switch next to the panel. For a 60 A transfer switch, plan on around $2,000. Place the generator at least 6 metres from buildings, as Health Canada recommends, and never in the garage.

When will I receive the quote?

Within 24 to 48 business hours after the assessment visit. It is detailed and free, with no deposit. We don’t set any price over the phone: we need to see the installation first.
