In short
- In the 2021 census, about 74% of Kirkland’s dwellings dated from 1961 to 1990, and about 87% were single-detached houses.
- Before any EV charger, a load calculation decides: nothing to change, a load controller, or more capacity.
- Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) licence 5815-0137-01 for our master electricians, members of the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec. No deposit: payment comes once the work is finished.
- Kirkland is not served by one of Québec’s municipal electricity systems: it is served by Hydro-Québec. When the service entrance has to be disconnected, the request to the utility is our job.
What our master electricians do in Kirkland
We travel everywhere on the island of Montréal, and Kirkland is among the neighbouring areas listed on our Pierrefonds-Roxboro page. Our services cover the whole house, from the basement panel to the mast fastened to the outside wall, as well as plexes, condos and businesses.
Each job below starts with a visit. The quote that follows lists every item one by one.
Electrical panel
100 A, full panel, subpanel
A 100 A panel with no room for a new circuit can be upgraded to 200 A. When space is lacking rather than capacity, a subpanel solves the problem. Still on fuses? We replace them with breakers. The load calculation done on site decides between these options.
Service entrance
Up to 400 A
Redoing the service entrance means bringing it to 200, 320 or 400 A. A corroded or poorly secured mast is replaced during the same job, which saves you a second visit and a second power interruption.
EV charger
Level 2, FLO or Siemens
The model we install most often is the FLO Home X3, designed in Canada; we also install Siemens chargers. Already bought yours? We install it if it carries a CSA or cULus certification mark.
Generator
Manual or automatic transfer switch
A portable unit plugs into an outlet installed outside, connected to a manual transfer switch near the panel. A permanent unit runs on propane or natural gas; its automatic transfer switch starts it and transfers the circuits within a few seconds. The gas work is handled by a licensed gas contractor, with whom we coordinate.
General electrical work
Baseboards, thermostats, recessed lights
Thermostats and baseboard heaters to replace, a water heater disconnect switch, a 240 V outlet, GFCI outlets, recessed lights, wiring for a basement being finished: these small jobs are easily grouped into a single visit.
No rates are posted in advance for this work: the amount depends on the task, the number of points to connect and how easy access is. The estimate, on the other hand, costs nothing.

Get a quoteKirkland, a city built mostly from 1961 to 1990
The first farms were established in the early 18th century along the Côte Saint-Charles, now Saint-Charles Boulevard. In 1961, the municipality became the City of Kirkland. Merged into Montréal in 2002, it regained its city status in 2006 and is part of the Montréal agglomeration. In the 2021 census, it had 19,413 residents.
Of 6,665 occupied dwellings, 5,775 are single-detached houses, or about 86.6%. The rest includes, among others, 555 row houses and 225 dwellings in buildings of five or more storeys. About 92.9% of households own their home. Outside the residential neighbourhoods, an industrial park stretches on both sides of Highway 40.
The table sorts dwellings by construction period, with the point a master electrician looks at first.
| Construction period | Dwellings | The point to examine |
|---|---|---|
| 1960 or earlier | 105 (about 1.6%) | If a fuse panel is still in place, replacing it with a breaker panel, with a capacity set by the calculation. |
| 1961 to 1980 | 2,875 (about 43.1%) | The wiring: aluminum is found most often in houses built from 1965 to 1975. Its connections are redone with AlumiConn connectors or devices marked CO/ALR; damaged wiring is rewired. |
| 1981 to 1990 | 2,085 (about 31.3%) | If the panel runs out of space, a subpanel can be added; if it runs out of capacity, we go up to 200 A based on the calculation. |
| 1991 to 2021 | 1,595 (about 23.9%) | The remaining margin for an EV charger, a spa or a finished basement, measured by the calculation, then a load controller if that is enough. |
Whatever the age of the house, three panel brands deserve a careful look: Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, Commander and Sylvania. A careful look, not automatic replacement: we never replace a panel because of its name, and no law requires you to replace a panel that works. If your insurer has questions, we provide you with the documentation.
An EV charger on a 100 A service entrance
Our master electricians do the home’s load calculation before proposing anything, and the charger must be part of that calculation. It leads to one of three conclusions: the charger connects without changing anything, a load controller makes it possible, or the capacity must be increased first.
The load controller, also called load shedding, prevents the charger and another large load from running at the same time. In many homes, it avoids replacing the panel, and it costs much less than a full upgrade. When it is enough, it is what we recommend.
In a single-family house where the panel still has room, expect around $1,750 for an installed FLO charger, unit included. That amount covers the dedicated breaker, the cable over a normal distance, the municipal permit, commissioning and testing with your vehicle. A capacity increase, a trench to a detached garage or a long cable run are extra. There are usually two weeks between the visit and the installation, and a simple installation is often done in half a day.
Québec grants $600 through its Écorecharge program to the owner of an electric vehicle who has a charger installed at home. The grant covers only the price of a connected charger on the official list, never the installation costs.
City permits and Hydro-Québec power interruptions
In Kirkland, renovating a building requires a building permit, and most renovation work calls for a certificate of authorization. The City’s permit application page does not mention electrical work. For the renovation itself, check with the City; City Hall is at 17200 Hymus Boulevard.
On the electrical side, if a permit or a declaration of work is required, we obtain and complete them ourselves. No forms on your end.
Kirkland is not served by one of Québec’s municipal electricity systems: it is served by Hydro-Québec. If the work involves the service entrance, we handle the arrangements with Hydro-Québec and tell you when the power will be cut. For a panel replacement, the house is usually without power for half a day to a full day.
The steps of a project in Kirkland
Small or large, every job follows the same order.
A first conversation
By phone or through a quote request, you describe the project. Tell us the service entrance amperage and the panel brand if you know them, and add three photos: one of the panel with the door open, one of the main breaker label and one of the whole wall.
The visit and the written price
A master electrician assesses the installation at your home; if an appliance is being added, they calculate the load at the same time. Their detailed quote is ready within the following 24 to 48 business hours. We choose not to give a firm price over the phone.
The work and the documents
The work complies with the Construction Code of Québec, every circuit touched is tested and the declaration is filed. You receive the detailed invoice and the work report, then pay by Interac, debit, credit or cash.
Something unexpected when a wall is opened? We call you before going any further. We use only top-quality materials.
A power outage or electrical hazard in Kirkland
A burning smell near the panel, a main breaker that won’t stay on, part of the house without power: an emergency doesn’t go through a quote request. Reach our emergency team at 438-542-7304, day or night, seven days a week. A master electrician heads to your home as soon as the situation has been assessed over the phone.
If it is safe for you to do so, switch off the main breaker, move away, then call. After a basement flood, Hydro-Québec asks that a master electrician check the installation before power is restored.

Frequently asked questions in Kirkland
Do you work in Kirkland?
Yes. Our master electricians go everywhere on the island of Montréal, Kirkland included, for residential or commercial projects. We work out of our offices in Mirabel and our warehouse in Laval. If you have no power right now, call 438-542-7304.
My service entrance is 100 A: can I still add an EV charger?
The load calculation answers the question: either the charger connects with no other change, or a load controller makes it possible, or the capacity must be increased first. The controller costs much less than a full upgrade and, when it does the job, we recommend it.
My house dates from the early 1970s: does it have aluminum wiring?
Possibly: this wiring is found mostly in houses built between 1965 and 1975, and about 43.1% of Kirkland’s dwellings date from 1961 to 1980. The visit lets us confirm it. The connections are then redone with hardware made for aluminum, or the circuit is rewired if it is damaged, and you receive a work report for your insurer.
Does the City of Kirkland require a permit for electrical work?
The City’s permit application page covers construction and renovation, without mentioning electrical work. If our part of the job requires a permit or a declaration of work, we take care of it.
What price should I expect to replace the panel?
It’s hard to give an exact price: it depends on so many things around your project. In general, a 200-amp panel replacement comes to about $1,850 for a single-family home, and about $2,900 if the service entrance is redone at the same time. The exact price comes after the visit: the detailed quote is free, with no deposit, and arrives 24 to 48 business hours after the visit.
Can you install a permanent generator?
Yes, for all the electrical work: automatic transfer switch, auxiliary panel for the priority circuits and connection. The natural gas or propane is handled by a licensed gas contractor, with whom we coordinate. Expect around $3,200 for an automatic transfer switch installed and connected, plus the generator.
Before buying a house in Kirkland, can you inspect the electrical system?
Yes. A master electrician inspects the panel, the service entrance and the circuits they can reach, and gives you their findings in writing. That way, you know what work to plan before you commit.
