In short

  • Hampstead is one of the neighbouring areas our master electricians travel to, as they do everywhere else on the island of Montréal. They hold RBQ (Régie du bâtiment du Québec) licence 5815-0137-01 and are members of the CMEQ.
  • According to Statistics Canada (2021), about 86.7% of Hampstead’s dwellings date from 1980 or earlier, including 46.8% from 1960 or earlier.
  • Only one dwelling in two is a single-detached house: semi-detached houses, duplexes and apartments make up the other half of the housing stock.
  • Power comes from Hydro-Québec. When a panel or a service entrance has to be replaced, we are the ones who request the power cut.

Our services in Hampstead

Hampstead is a city in its own right, an enclave within Montréal. It borders the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, to the west, and our page for that borough names it among the neighbouring areas where we work.

Every request follows the same path: a master electrician looks at the installation, then a written quote details the items one by one. Here is the work we do in houses like those in Hampstead.

Electrical panel

Fuses, 60 A, full slots

A fuse box still in service or a 60 A panel that is too tight is replaced with a breaker panel. We go up to 200 A when the load calculation justifies it, or we add a subpanel if slots are lacking. A panel is never condemned for its brand alone: we judge its actual condition.

Replacing a panel

Service entrance

Mast, meter base, service cable

To gain capacity, the service entrance is redone at 200, 320 or 400 A, from the mast to the panel. A corroded or poorly anchored mast is replaced at the same time, so the house goes through only one power cut.

EV charger

Driveway or exterior wall

The model we install most is the FLO Home X3, a Level 2 charger designed in Canada; we also install Siemens chargers. On a single-family house, installing a FLO comes to about $1,750, charger included, for a typical case: room in the panel and an ordinary distance.

Installing an EV charger

Generator

Portable or permanent

A portable generator plugs into an outdoor power inlet connected to a manual transfer switch installed near the panel. A permanent generator, running on propane or natural gas, starts on its own thanks to an automatic transfer switch. The gas work goes to a licensed gas company; all the electrical work is ours.

General electrical work

Baseboards, outlets, recessed lights

Thermostats and baseboard heaters to replace, GFCI outlets, 240 V circuits, IC-rated recessed lights where the ceiling is insulated, wiring for a basement being finished. Several small jobs? Group them into a single visit: the estimate is free.

Small jobs (in French)

In a duplex or a triplex, each unit must keep its own identified power supply and its own protection. For an EV charger, we also check which meter will feed it.

A 1914 garden city and its homes

Hampstead was founded in 1914 by eight Montréal businessmen and designed as a garden city. Merged in 2002 into the borough of Côte-Saint-Luc–Hampstead–Montréal-Ouest, it regained its status as a town on January 1, 2006. In 2021, Statistics Canada counted 7,037 residents. There are no businesses on its territory, which is crossed by two major roads: Queen Mary Road and Fleet Road.

In the same census, 1,245 of the 2,490 occupied dwellings are single-detached houses, exactly half. The rest is split among semi-detached houses, duplexes and apartments, including those in the buildings on Côte-Saint-Luc Road. About 68.3% of households own their home. The type of dwelling changes what we examine when we arrive.

Type of dwellingShare in 2021What we examine when we arrive
Single-detached house50.0% (1,245)The margin left in the panel and the service entrance before adding an EV charger, a spa or a finished basement.
Semi-detached house8.4% (210)The slots still free in the panel and the cable route to the desired location.
Duplex14.7% (365)The meter that will feed the appliance and the separation of circuits between the two units.
Apartment in a building27.1% (675)In a condo, the condo board’s agreement for common areas and how consumption is allocated.

The age of the housing stock matters as much as its type: 46.8% of dwellings date from 1960 or earlier, 40.0% from 1961 to 1980, and barely 6.0% were built since 2001. In houses from 1965 to 1975 especially, we may come across aluminum wiring. We then redo the connections with parts made for aluminum, such as AlumiConn connectors and devices marked CO/ALR, then give you a report of the work to show your insurer. Damaged wiring, for its part, is rewired.

Hampstead permits and the Hydro-Québec network

The Town of Hampstead requires a permit or a certificate of authorization before any construction or renovation work. On its website, the Town lists among building permits new buildings and additions, structural or exterior alterations, and the installation of public utilities, plumbing or mechanical systems. A pool, a spa or mechanical equipment falls under the certificate of authorization.

The Town aims for a turnaround of no more than 14 days for a minor permit with a complete file, and no more than 30 days for a major project. Town Hall is at 5569 Queen Mary Road.

For the electrical part, the permit steps and the declaration of work, when there are any, are up to us.

Hampstead gets its electricity from Hydro-Québec: unlike Westmount, it is not one of the nine municipal networks that deliver electricity themselves in Québec. When the job involves the panel or the service entrance and requires cutting the power, we are the ones who request it from Hydro-Québec, and you know in advance when the power will be interrupted. A panel replacement leaves the house without electricity for half a day, sometimes a full day.

EV charger or spa: capacity first

Before any EV charger, our master electricians calculate the total load of the house. This calculation must include the charger. It leads to one of three outcomes: the charger is added with no change, it is added thanks to a load controller, or capacity must be increased.

The load controller prevents the charger and another large appliance from running at the same time. In many houses, it avoids replacing the panel, and when it is enough for the job, it is what we recommend: it costs much less than a full upgrade.

A spa needs a circuit of its own, protected against ground faults and fitted with a disconnect switch. In Hampstead, installing one also requires a certificate of authorization from the Town.

As for financial help, if you have an electric vehicle, Écorecharge reimburses $600 of the charger’s price, provided it is connected and on Québec’s list. Installation, wiring and panel work are not eligible. We check the official list with you before you buy, not after.

Your project in three steps

Whether it’s for a single outlet or a new service entrance, the order doesn’t change.

  1. First contact

Describe the job by phone or through the quote request. Three photos speed things up: the open panel, the label on the main breaker and one last photo showing the whole wall. The service entrance’s amperage and the panel’s brand also help.

  2. The visit and the price

A master electrician assesses the installation at your home. The detailed quote, free and with no deposit, arrives within 24 to 48 business hours after the visit. No fixed price is given over the phone: that’s deliberate.

  3. The work and payment

We work to the Electricity chapter of the Construction Code of Québec, cutting only the affected circuits when possible. Every circuit is tested before the power is turned back on, and you pay when the work is finished, by Interac, credit, debit or cash.

Something unexpected behind a wall? We call you before going any further. Buying a house in Hampstead? Have its electrical system inspected first: the master electrician looks at the panel, the service entrance and the circuits within reach, then leaves you written observations.

Electrical emergency in Hampstead

A burning smell near the panel, a main breaker that keeps tripping, an outlet that is hot to the touch: don’t wait, call 438-542-7304. Our emergency team answers day and night, seven days a week, and after a first assessment over the phone, a master electrician is sent to your home.

In the meantime, switch off the main breaker, only if it is safe for you to do so, then stay away from the installation.

Frequently asked questions in Hampstead

Do you come to Hampstead?

Yes. Hampstead is one of the areas neighbouring Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce where our master electricians work, and we go everywhere on the island of Montréal. House, plex or condo: it all starts with a visit.

Who supplies electricity in Hampstead?

Hydro-Québec. Hampstead is not one of Québec’s nine municipal networks; Westmount, on the other hand, has one. For a power cut related to a panel or service entrance replacement, we make the request to Hydro-Québec.

Does the Town require a permit for electrical work?

The Town of Hampstead requires a building permit for installing public utilities, plumbing or mechanical systems, and a certificate of authorization for a spa or mechanical equipment. It does not publish a list specific to electrical work. If our part of the job requires a permit or a declaration, we take care of it.

My house dates from before 1960: does the panel need replacing?

Not necessarily. No law requires replacing a panel that works, and we don’t replace one because of its name. We inspect it first; some models, such as Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, Commander or Sylvania, do however deserve a careful look.

How much does an installed EV charger cost in Hampstead?

About $1,750 for a FLO installed on a single-family house, unit included, when the panel has free slots and the charger isn’t too far from it. A panel upgrade, a long cable run or repairing a finished wall are added to the price.

Can you connect my portable generator?

Yes. We install an outdoor inlet to plug the unit into, and a manual transfer switch next to the panel; for a 60 A model installed and connected, plan on around $2,000, not including the generator itself. Above all, never plug it into the dryer outlet: the current would flow backwards. And the unit never runs in the garage.

How long does it take to get a price?

Allow 24 to 48 business hours between the master electrician’s visit and the detailed quote being sent. It costs nothing, and we never ask for a deposit.
